Ian has over thirty years’ experience as a Senior Line Executive, Board Member and Consultant. Ian’s direct line experience includes being the Strategy Director for a major Australian retailer. Prior to SPP Ian was the Managing Partner of Deloitte’s Asia Pacific Strategy and Operations practice, one of the founders of the Mitchell Madison Group in Australia and the leader of Grant Thornton’s Strategy and Growth practice. For the past 15 years, Ian has also served on the Boards and Advisory Boards of a range of organisations.

Ian specialises in assisting clients with their growth strategies, incorporating M&A, Market Entry, Customer Segmentation and Channel strategies. New Product Development

A major telecommunications client identified an opportunity to support greater data connectivity to their enterprise clients through the development of a new product / service, a Supply Chain Data Exchange. Our work commenced with conducting in depth industry conversations with prospective customers, development of an initial commercial feasibility analysis, refinement of the core value proposition. Our work continued with the client through initial prototyping, business case development and acquisition of their initial customer. The new service was recognised externally, winning a number of industry innovation awards, and internally as one of the clients most successful new business launches of recent years.

 

Export Market Development

This landmark project for a state government body conducted in depth research and provided policy recommendations regarding the role of supply chain traceability in the development of a differentiated market for export agricultural products. Our work incorporated an assessment of the importance of traceability to our export customers, the current state of competing nations performance and recommendations on the role of government in promoting the evolution of industry capability domestically.

 

Business Model Optimisation

A leading ASX100 manufacturer recognised the opportunity to dramatically improve the support provided to its core business operations by its internal technology support function. We worked with the client to develop a revised operating model, organisation design and outsourcing approach to position them to better support the strategic priorities of their varied operating division at same or lower cost.

 

Digital Transformation

A major Australasian provider of asset management services saw an opportunity to establish a differentiated position from competitors in the sector by better leveraging digital technologies. We worked with the client to redefine their end-to-end lifecycle management of service delivery to some of Australia’s dominant telecommunications, energy and water service providers. This involved reconceptualising service delivery, the digital technologies that would enable the transformation, redefinition of key roles across the organisation and the development of revised accountability measures.

 

Market entry strategy

A leading international engineering company was considering entry into the Australian market, potentially by acquisition. We conducted an exhaustive analysis of proposed public and private sector infrastructure investment and the fit of the investment areas to the client’s differentiating capabilities.  We then conducted a search of potential acquisition candidates and provided the client with recommendations on potential fit to achieve their strategic objectives.

Ian has been involved across the M&A lifecycle examples of his experience include:

  • Commercial due diligence on behalf of the private equity consortium considering the purchase of a major Australian retailer.
  • Strategic due diligence on behalf of a major Australian telecommunications company of a range of digital and hi-tech investments
  • Deal negotiation and execution of divestment of a major non-strategic division of an ASX listed corporation.
  • Post-acquisition business case delivery on behalf of an international serial acquirer of portfolio assets.
  • Post-merger integration on behalf of a major listed resources entity
