4th Australian Data Summit: 6-8 March 2018, Canberra

Managing Partner and Government Practice Lead Phil Noble has Chaired this morning's 4th Australian Government Data Summit keynote sessions, introducing an impressive line-up of experts including:

  • Dr Jonathan Roberts, Chief Data Scientist, Department of Justice UK;
  • Duncan McIntyre, Assistant Secretary- Data and Digital Branch, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet;
  • Annette Cooper, Data and Analytics Lead, New Zealand Defence Force; and,
  • Stephen Wayne, National Practice Director, RXP Insight.

The summit has brought together more than 300 delegates from the public and private sectors in a think tank environment to discuss the opportunities and challenges presented by the proliferation of data and rapid advances in technology.

Topics discussed have included the organisational and cultural challenges of creating value from data, as well as some of many complexities around how to join up disparate data sets to create meaningful and impactful outcomes for citizens and businesses.

One of the biggest take-aways has been the need for public sector agencies to take a strategic approach to data opportunities. The best results are achieved by honing in on the problems that most need solving; and building a long-term capability based on partnerships and people, as well as technology.

In this afternoon's session, Phil joined the conversation during the Summit's stream on facilitating data availability through a collaborative government.

Emma Gray, Chief Data Officer at ANZ, kicked off with lessons from the private sector, with a focus on strategically managing data to deliver excellence in customer experience.

Using some successful, global, real-life examples highlighting where joined up data sets have made significant social and economic impact, Phil then talked about the success factors for delivering significant data analytics projects; and some of the relevant capabilities of SPP and Zetaris.

SPP has already advised a number of agencies on issues related to data, ranging from data strategy, to data monetisation, to best practice in designing data programs. SPP also has strong data-analytics program management skills. Zetaris is the creator of a leading virtual data analytics platform that is being utilised by major organisations including Westpac, as well as leading government agencies in Victoria and NSW. Together, the SPP Zetaris partnership solves the challenge of integrating 'big data' solutions for Government, in an efficient and effective way.

SPP and Zetaris are proud co-sponsors of this #GovData18.  We're very much looking forward to tomorrow's Day 2 kick off.
